Whats your choice?
I find that a melee weapon, a rifle/carbine and pistol are nice, especialy when they share ammunition.
I prefer the Ruger 10/22 carbine and Ruger Mk. II, both in .22LR

Shotguns are a good choice if your not a good shot, but other than that, its a very poor weapon choice for zombies, mostly because of these facts:
Ammo: 15 12 guage rounds weigh a pound! It takes 770 .22 long rifle bullets to weigh that much...Which would you rather carry?
Fouling: Shotguns are filthy weapons, and create huge ammounts of fouiling, and, therefore, will jam easier than a normal rifle
Stopping power: A 12 guage bullet generates around 2000 joules/newtons, while a .22 bullet generates around 2280 joules. So, a .22 bullet is more effective than a single shotgun pellet, and also, the .22 defomrs so much that it will bounce inside a human skull. Shotgun pellets, now made of steel, will not.
Weight: A .22 rifle usualy weighs about 4-6lbs, while a pump action shotgun weighs around 8lbs for a light model
Rate of fire: Even the best semi auto shotgun is only capable of firing 2 rounds a second. A good rifleman can get much more with a semi auto rilfe
Ammo capacity: There is no shotgun in the world that can hold more than sixteen shotgun shells, while many .22 rifles or normal rifles can have 20, 30 or even 75 round magazines.
Recoil: Shot guns kick a lot. It takes something around the size of a .338 lapula magnum rifle to buck as hard. Recoil makes it harder to aquire a target after a shot.
Sights: Shotguns usualy have very perimitive sights, making accurate shooting at ranges beyond twenty yards difficult. Most rifle sights, even cheap ones, are effective out to 50 yards!
Range: Even when loaded with rifled, saboted tungsten slugs (At a cost of $3 a peice) are effective only out to 190 yards, were the slug will impact the ground when fired from 5' above the ground (The average height a shooter fires from). At that range, it is extremely in accurate, and it would be nearly imposible, even for a skilled shot to hit. Even a poor shot with a good rifle could make head shots at 50 yards or a skilled shot at over 200 yards with a rifle...
So, there 'ya go.

Well that kinda depends on the zombies I think. If you mean Resident Evil zombies a rifle is good because head shots stop them but if you mean Evil Dead zombies then you want something that will spread fire or acid damage. In that case a double barrelled 10 gauge with white phosphorous pellets would be good against them as that will burn until removed and Zombies suck at fine motor control. Edged weapons are good for either if you have get up close. Thems my two cents.

Repeat after me, everyone...
Willie Pete ammo does not exist for shotguns. Repeat it!
There is one exception, so called 'dragons breath' rounds, but there were only a few thousand made back in the late 80's.
Yeah, a shotgun might be better for them, but still, a rifle will do far more damage than a shotgun. A 7.62mm rifle bullet generates around 3500 joules/Newtosn, while a shotgun slug (Solid 4 0z lead slug) generates about 1.5 times that.
So, which would you rather have, a shotgun with at most 8 shots, or a semi automatic battle rifle with 20 rounds or more of ammunition that is nearly as effective?
Edged weapons rock.

Yes well Popular fiction such as Vampire the Masquerade give the indication that phosphorus rounds do exist because that's one way to kill a vampire is blasting it in the heart with a phosphorus shotgun....The downside is the phosphorus warps the barrel making the gun useless after about the third shot.

Dragon's breath rounds are what I meant. getting ahold of some is no more unlikely than getting attacked by Zombies I was thinking. I agree edged weapons rock.

"The downside is the phosphorus warps the barrel making the gun useless after about the third shot." And they tend to blow back into the action of the weapon, fucking it up. I wouldnt dream of firing 'em out of an autoshotie, and I would have to think about using 'em in a pump. It would be O.K in a single or double, I think. Yeah, Zombies might not be attacking any time soon (Ill still be ready, though. Bought another 2000 rounds of ammo today), but Its possible to get DB's rounds...I have actually seen them online. Level three permit required, just like for silencers and machineguns. As for WoD, thats a whole nother story. There are better ways of killing vampires than w/ DB rounds. I like edged weapons or anti material rifles for that (Rifles designed to take out small tanks and expensive things from over a mile away) 15.2mm Styer is a good anti vampire bullet. Kidnapping, Ellie? Hardly. Ill get to your place first.
