**actually got this idea from Trace. As she talked about Richard being a tool. I know he's a tool okay, but he could have been a great character!**
There it was, that shining metal, it gleamed in the darkness. It called for her to pick it up. She could hear the claws behind her. Scampering for her, wanting her not to finish. But she needed the key. She reached out. A loud scream echoed behind her, and cut off as quickly as it started. She was so close to the key, it beckoned for her. Its emeralds eloquently placed along the long grip. She had reached it, a joy she had never felt rushed through her body. And from the corner of her eye, something black came for her hand.
She woke, breathing hard and her heart felt as if it was going to explode out of her chest. That was a bad dream, she thought. As ever night this week. There had to be something about it. There just had to be something about it.
That afternoon she sat in the meeting. The talker went on in a monotone, boring the hell out of everyone. She sat in the black cushioned chair, her bare legs crossed under the table. Her well manicured hand doodled on the paper in front of her. When the meeting was over she gathered her papers and went to her desk. She sat her papers down.
“That’s the key of Shaledron,” Bill, the mail-boy said as he put down her mail.
“What?” she asked looking at him.
“The key,” he said pointing to the doodle. “You must be good.”
“At what?”
“The game,” he said with a silly grin. “You have it to the last detail.”
“Oh,” she said.
“I’ve never seen you play at Cyberdawns,” he said.
“I’ve never been there.”
“Oh you played somewhere else. You should stop by and show us how you got the key,” he said and pushed his cart away.
After work she decided to take another way home. It meant driving by Cyberdawns. She couldn’t help herself parking in the parking lot. She sat there in her car hands on the steering wheel. “What am I doing here?” she asked herself. You have to play the game, her mind replied.
She shrugged out of her jacket. She grabbed her purse and made her way inside. She waked passed one of the kids who worked there. Her brown eyes scanned the games as she walked passed them. She stopped by one where someone was dancing. DDR, she had never heard of this stuff before.
She found Shaledron in the back. It was a virtual reality game. Six gamers stood on two small round platforms. Three on each one. They each had on a helmet of some sort. She watched them play. They didn’t do much. She looked at her watch. Six-thirty. She was going to be late for her date. She thought about turning around and just leaving, but her mind screamed for her to play the game.
“Hey,” Bill said behind her, scaring her to death. “You came. Wanna be on my team?”
“Sure,” she said.
“I see all the younger kids are playing, soon they will hit level four and be killed out.”
“Killed out?”
“Yeah it’s where one of the monsters gets you,” and then games over. He looked at her. “You’ve gotten to the key, you should know about all this.”
She shrugged. “Different phrases.”
“Ah,” he said nodding.
Red lights started flashing on the platforms. Two kids took off their vr helmets. “Damn, you Ryan. I was going to make it,” one said stepping off the platform angrily.
“Its getting close,” Bill said as others started to get booted out. Other newer players started to show up.
“Hey Bill you bring all your dates to play?” A girl said.
He smiled. “Na, she’s a coworker.”
She watched as the players stepped down. When it was all clear, they got onto the platforms. She Put on the helmet. It flashed press start. She reached out and pressed the button in front of her. She was transported to a cave. She looked around, and then looked down. She no longer wore her work outfit, instead she was wearing a black body suit.
Bill appeared at her side. “Hey,” he said looking at her. “You’re black, so your team leader.”
“I don’t want to be team leader,” she said.
When their other player appeared. A bright apparition appeared. “Welcome players. You have entered Shaledron. You must get the key to open the box and rid the world of the demon forces.”
“Evil forces,” she said.
“What?” Bill asked.
“Nothing,” she said.
The apparition disappeared. “Well lets play,” Bill said.
They had played for what seemed a day. Avoiding angry ghosts and demons. It should have tired her, but it made her want to get the key. She needed that key. They had reached level four. It was ten times harder then the last. But her and Bill made a good team. They had lost their third in the middle of the level.
“And you play this game all the time?”
Bill grabbed the pitchfork he found and shoved into a demon’s head. “Yeah,” he said. “It’s fun.”
They had reached the oak door to level five. “Is this it?”
Bill nodded. “I had never made it to the door. You are good,” he said. “Open it and let’s get in there.”
She touched the nob. It was hot in her hand. She turned it and pulled the door open. They were sucked into the next level. And then there was nothing. “It’s so dark in here,” she said looking around and seeing no Bill.
“Lighter,” he said and his hand caught on fire. “I found the light spell. Was sure it was no use for it, but here we are.”
The light made a small circle around them. “Level five, is nothing but darkness.”
Bill’s eyes moved trying to look further then the darkness would let him. “There has to be more in the darkness,” he said.
All the sudden they were blinded by a great flash and the evil being darkening Shaledron appeared before them. “Intruders. No one has ever made it this far. You have still this last level to accomplish before you can find the key. The key that will open the gate to once again enslave me.” The being stopped and looked at her. It laughed, and disappeared.
She looked at Bill. “Was he supposed to do that?”
He shrugged. “I don’t know it was weird.”
“Come on I have a date to get too,” she said.
They pushed through the hard level. They walked through goo, and killed strange two headed monsters. They fought perfectly, like they had done this before. Finally they reached a door.
“I thought level five was the end?”
“I thought it was too,” Bill said.
She opened the door. They walked through. There in the middle of the darkened room stood a table. On the table floated the sparkling key. It was just like the key in her dream. She had to get the key, but something in the back of her mind warned her away. But she wanted it so bad.
Bill walked in, and the light on his hand vanished in a puff. “Lighter,” he said. But the fire did not return.
“I don’t think the magic is going to work in here.”
They heard scampering of claws on the ground. “I don’t think whatever is in this room likes light. This is so fucked up.”
“Come on,” she said and started to run to the table. But it seemed now further. Something jumped on her ankle and sunk its teeth through her boot. She screamed and used on of her short blades to shove into the things back. “Watch it Bill, they are ankle biters!”
“Ouch! I noticed.”
Her eyes were on the key. It sung to her feeling her head, spinning a spell around her. Pulling her. She needed that key. She made it to the table finally. She reached out, and grabbed the key. Nothing bit at her, as she held the key. Bill ran up beside her. His eyes stuck on the key. “It’s so beautiful.”
She nodded. “We need to find the portal.”
With the light of the key the little things with sharp teeth didn’t bother them. Finally they found the portal door.
“We beat the game,” Bill said and pointed. “Look, that’s where the key goes!”
She shoved the key in. She wanted to get out of this game. She turned it. But instead of a big game over, the door opened. Red fire erupted throwing them back. They landed sprawled on their backs.
“What?” Bill asked. “Are you okay?”
“Yeah.”
The evil being in the beginning walked through. He looked different, less fake then the one before. Monsters followed behind him. He looked around. “Freedom,” he said his voice low. His red flame eyes looked at her and Bill. “She was the one.”
“What’s he talking about?” Bill asked her frightened.
She shook her head. The being moved out of the door. Its giant horse hoof feet made the ground thunder with each step. Its long claws clicked together as he rubbed his hands. “Video games. What a lovely tool. Who would have known I could get freed this way?”
“Is the game over?” Bill asked.
It laughed. “Yes,” his voice boomed. “The game is over.”
The demons behind him rushed them before they could run. “Why?” she asked as some of the demons held her.
“You were just a tool. I have many tools, and now thanks to this game, I am free.”
Bill screamed behind her. She tried to turn, but sharp teeth tore into the skin on her arm. She screamed as more teeth bit into her skin. She felt them eat her, tearing into her. Blackness finally came, taking her away from the monsters teeth.
****
People were screaming heading to the doors. One of the employees rushed to the game. “Oh my god,” he said looking at the dead bodies. They were torn and half eaten. How could this have happened? He turned getting sick all over the brown carpet.
The lights went out. The main game console reptured into fire. “What the Fuck,” the kid said.
The evil being walked from the flames. He breathed in the smoke and air. “Free.” His flamed eyes looked around amused. “Tools.” His demons ran out of the fire behind him, and chanced after kids. “Yes. I do love tools.”
